Time Is Nerve: Building Cyber Resilience When Resources Are Tight

Community hospitals face the same cyber threat as large health systems, often with a fraction of the staff and budget. This session reframes what success looks like: not that we stopped every disruption, but that we made it less harmful to patients and caregivers. In Time Is Nerve, Heather Costa draws on a personal story of catastrophic injury and recovery to map how resilience is built the same way in a body and in an organization: deliberately, in the right order, and long before it is tested. Attendees will leave with specific steps they can start this quarter, most requiring more intention than investment. Resilience cannot simply be purchased. It is built through deliberate choices over time, and it is never quite finished.
Heather M. Costa is a leading authority in cyber and technology resilience, currently serving as Director of Technology Resilience at Mayo Clinic. With over twenty years of experience, she has shaped resilience programs at premier healthcare institutions, notably pioneering business resilience at Cleveland Clinic before architecting Mayo Clinic’s enterprise-wide technology recovery and continuity initiatives.
