Understanding the Exceptions to Information Blocking

This presentation is a recording of a webinar given on 8/12/2020 by Clearwater’s Chief Risk Officer & SVP of Consulting Services, Jon Moore and Managing Principal Consultant, Wes Morris.

Overview

With the publication of the 21st Century Cures Act: Interoperability, Information Blocking, and the ONC Health IT Certification Program final rule on May 1, 2020, information blocking is more than just a nebulous condition of certification. It is now a well-defined practice with penalties and exceptions. As hospitals and other healthcare entities are required to implement the new interoperability rules to make their data more accessible, it is incumbent upon them to understand the exceptions as they develop their compliance strategies.

During this webinar, two senior members of Clearwater’s Consulting Services team will review the eight exceptions to information blocking in detail and offer insight on how healthcare organizations can best adhere to the new rules and avoid the potential penalties. Webinar attendees will learn:

  • The distinction between exceptions related to denial of access and those related to procedures for fulfilling requests
  • How state and federal privacy laws factor into information blocking considerations
  • What security concerns may lead you to limit data accessibility
  • How a risk analysis can help you develop a strong and secure approach to interoperability
